DIY Autumn Crochet: How to Make This Gorgeous Granny Square Poncho & Cardigan!
Hello, fellow crocheters and craft lovers! 🍁
Autumn is finally here, and you know what that means—it’s official cozy sweater and poncho season! If you’ve been looking for the perfect, eye-catching project to keep you warm while turning heads, you are in the right place.
Today, I’m absolutely thrilled to share one of my favorite recent creations with you: a stunning, vintage-inspired Granny Square Poncho and its sister project, a cozy Granny Square Cardigan, both featuring a rich, earthy color palette of warm rust-brown and soft cream
Below, I’ll tell you all about how this design came together and the inspiration behind each piece
The Inspiration: Autumnal Retro Vibes
There is something so timeless about a classic granny square, but when you piece them together into oversized, flowing silhouettes, they become instant fashion statements
For these projects, I wanted something that felt earthy, boho, and incredibly cozy
We made two variations of this design, and honestly, I can't decide which one I love more:
1. The Bohemian Granny Square Poncho
This poncho is the ultimate throw-on-and-go piece
2. The Casual Granny Square Cardigan
If you prefer sleeves and an open front, the cardigan version is an absolute dream
What You’ll Need to Get Started:
Yarn: Medium-weight (Category 4) yarn in Rust/Brown and Cream/Natural (acrylic or a wool-acrylic blend works best for soft drape and warmth)
. Crochet Hook: Size 5.0 mm (H-8) or 5.5 mm (I-9), depending on your tension.
Tapestry Needle (for sewing squares together and weaving in ends).
Scissors and Stitch Markers.
Behind the Pattern: How It’s Made
Both the poncho and cardigan share the same foundation: the classic granny square with a floral-like center.
The Squares: Multiple individual multi-round granny squares are worked up first
. The Joining: The motifs are joined together using a slip-stitch or whip-stitch seam to create a neat cream grid effect
. The Ribbing & Borders: Ribbed edges along the cuffs, neckline, and hems add clean structure and a professional finish
.
